Weekly Update: February 5, 2025
Word from the Pastor:
I pray this weekly newsletter finds you doing well. This past weekend, I had the privilege of preaching at my last grandparent’s funeral. It was, for me, pretty surreal and serendipitous. Preaching at a loved one's funeral does a lot for a person, but maybe more than anything, it loudly echos that time is short and moving forward, and there is nothing we can do to stop it.
At a funeral, it's common to hear about eternal decisions, heaven, and salvation, but I focused on wisdom—something I believe may be one of the most important values, alongside love. I talked about the goal we all share: to look back and say, "That was a life well lived," or in scriptural terms, "I ran the race set before me." I emphasized how the stories we live are the only things that outlast us. I shared how my grandparents lived by wisdom, passed it on, and wrote a meaningful story that lives on in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Though their names may fade over time, the wisdom they passed down will endure.
Then we looked at two regrets typically echoed by those lying on their deathbed:
(1) I wish I’d spent more time doing things that brought me purpose and joy instead of using excuses like "I don’t have time" or "one day." The thing about "one day" is it’s always in the future. In the name of wisdom, if there’s something you want to do, do it! Your biggest regret will be not having done it.
(2) I wish I’d spent more time with friends and family. The best stories are made with the people we love. If you've been too busy for those around you, it's time to slow down and prioritize what really matters. Wisdom reminds us: "People come first, and we don’t know how much time we have together, so let’s enjoy each other now.”
See you Sunday!
