Weekly Update: August 21, 2024
Word from the Pastor:
Hey y'all, hope this New letter finds you doing well. I am currently in East Central Iowa enjoying a high temperature of 76 degrees. HOWEVER, I will be back on the 25th to enjoy more of our triple digit temps and more importantly be with you all.
I just wanted to do a quick challenge. I recognize this may not be relevant to everyone, but as we head back to school and traffic and demands worsen, I want to challenge you with the idea of sanctuary. In the medieval times, sanctuary was not simply a place to worship, it was a place or space where you could slow down and rest in the arms of safety. It began, as an old testament idea, if a criminal grabbed the horns of the altar, even if they were a criminal, they could not be pursued. By the Medieval time that church building had become the replacement for the altar, and if a criminal or outcast or even one the church itself did not consider holy was running from persecution, if they ran into the church building and declared "sanctuary' they were declared safe from that which was chasing them. As words and ideas evolve, the idea of sanctuary is not so much an established place that we all agree on, but is that place where you might go - a trail, the lake, the mountains, your living room,, your bedroom - where even if for a moment, you can escape the pressures and pursuits of the world we live in and rest in the idea that God is in control. So, I pray this week as you dodge through traffic, wait in drop off lines, or endure the attitudes and personalities of an over busy world, that you will find a place that you can claim, "sanctuary."
